A major political shake-up hit Taraba State on Monday as Speaker John Bonzena and all Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the State House of Assembly defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of Governor Agbu Kefas’ planned defection.
The lawmakers made their switch public during a brief ceremony in Jalingo, where viral videos showed them trading their PDP caps for ones bearing President Bola Tinubu’s insignia and receiving brooms, the APC’s symbolic emblem.
The move comes just days after Governor Kefas confirmed he would officially join the APC on November 19, describing the defection as “a major shift and alignment” tied to the “destiny of the Taraba people.”
Kefas becomes the latest PDP governor to cross over in 2025, following similar moves by Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Douye Diri (Bayelsa).
With the legislature now fully aligned with the ruling party, analysts say Taraba’s political structure is undergoing one of its most significant realignments in recent years.
