Poor menstrual hygiene, dangerous to reproductive system, says matron, KASU medical centre

The matron of the Kaduna State University (KASU) Medical Centre, Maryam Abubakar, has warned that poor menstrual hygiene is dangerous to the female reproductive system.
Abubakar state this at an enlightenment campaign on menstrual hygiene among girls. The event which on Thursday at KASU, was organised by New Day Empowerment and Development Foundation (NDEDF).
She also warned against the danger in using disinfectant or soap to wash the virgina, stressing that it is the leading cause of cancer.
She advised that the virgina should only be washed with warm water, adding that during menstruation, sanitary pad should be worn for a period of four to five hours only.
“The use of disinfectant, soap and others to wash the Virgina is unhygienic, instead warm water should be use.
“When you are on mensturation use, tight painties so that the pad can fit in.
“When women don’t manage this mensturation properly, it affects the reproductive system and becomes a major health crisis”, she said.
Also speaking, the founder of NDEDF, Grace Daniels, said the crisis poor management of mensturation can be deadly.
She said the awareness for Sanitary Health was aimed at educating young girls to take good care of themselves during their menstruation.
She also warned that, the use of disinfectant and soap for washing the virgina is one of the leading causes of cancer among young ladies.
She said sanitary pads must not be flushed in the toilets or littered in the backyard or drainage system, but should be properly disposed in the waste bins.
The programme was attended by many female students of the university.
