Police arrests 38 for protesting against S’Court verdict affirming Sule as Nasarawa governor

The police in Lafia, Nasarawa state have reportedly arrested 38 people during a protest against Friday’s Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the election of Abdullahi Sule as governor of the state. Some aggrieved supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), mostly youths were said to have staged the protest at the PDP secretariat in Lafia the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Sule as governor. The protesters were said to have blocked the Lafia-Jos, setting up bonfires.Sources said the police immediately swooped in on the protesters, tear-gassed and dispersed them while about 38 of them were arrested.
Many people were said to have been injured by the police and were taken to the hospital.  The mob was said to have chanted war songs, alleging that the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court was induced by some prominent northern traditional rulers, days before the judgment was delivered.
There was deployment of security personnel in Lafia on Friday following tension and anxiety over the out come of the judgment.
The governorship election petition tribunal had in its judgment, declared David Ombugadu, the winner of the March 18, 2023 election.
However, the court of appeal in Abuja voided the decision of the tribunal and declared Sule as the duly elected governor of the state.
Not satisfied with the judgment of the court of appeal, Ombugadu, headed to the Supreme Court.
