The Supreme Court will on Friday, deliver judgment on the Plateau, Kano, Zamfara, Bauchi, Lagos and Ebonyi governorship appeals.
Governors of the three states – Caleb Mutfwang (of Plateau) and Abba Yusuf (of Kano) and Dauda Lawal (of Zamfara), are challenging the nullifications of their elections at the Appeal Court while the appeal for Bauchi, Lagos and Ebonyi were filed by opposition parties challenges the affirmation of their elections.
There are reports of palpable anxiety among government officials and residents of the two states about the outcome of the judgment.
In the affected states, especially in Kano, Zamfara and Plateau, security has been beefed up ahead of the judgment, to forestall any outbreak of law and order.
In Plateau, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), in a statement on Thursday in Jos, called for calm among their supporters and well-wishers and to avoid any act that is detrimental to peaceful coexistence in the state.
“Whatever direction the decision of the apex court goes, the APC which has been a respecter of the rule of law and a strong believer in our judicial system, would welcome the outcome in good faith”, the APC said in a statement by Sylvanus Namang, the party’s spokesperson in the state.
