In this week’s Security Update, Rimamnde Shawulu Kwewum presents a detailed analysis of major security incidents across Nigeria and Africa. From coordinated bandit attacks to regional terror escalation, this edition paints a sobering picture of violence, resilience, and response.

In Zamfara State, armed bandits killed five police officers and three community vigilantes in an ambush along the Gusau–Funtua Road, Tsafe LGA. Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed the incident and mourned the slain personnel. In a separate attack, gunmen invaded a mosque in Maradawa community, killing worshippers during morning prayers and abducting several others — part of a disturbing trend of assaults on religious spaces in the North-West.

In Plateau State, 13 people were killed in coordinated night raids on Ratchas and Rawuru villages of Barkin Ladi. The local chairman, Stephen Pwajok, and traditional rulers condemned the killings and called for decisive federal intervention. Meanwhile, Katsina State witnessed a peace dialogue between community leaders and bandit factions under the Operation Safe Corridors Initiative. Five LGAs participated — Bakori, Kafuru, Malumfashi, Kankara, and Funtua — signaling fragile but hopeful reconciliation efforts In Kogi State, joint security forces arrested two injured bandits and their unlicensed medical collaborators in Kabba-Bunu LGA.

Their camp and clinic were destroyed — a major blow to local criminal networks. In Borno, ISWAP militants ambushed an army convoy near Konduga, killing several troops including a commanding officer. Intelligence reports indicate renewed jihadist mobility linked to the Nigeria–Niger diplomatic breakdown, which has weakened the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in the region.

In Kenya, the death of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga triggered chaos during his laying-in-state ceremony, leaving multiple casualties. Across the Sahel, jihadist networks continue expanding from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger toward Nigeria’s coastal regions, exploiting weak borders and governance vacuums.

These events highlight a shifting security map — from northern Nigeria’s forests to the Sahel corridor — where insurgency, governance failures, and humanitarian crises intersect.
