Kano vows to eradicate Polio within four months

Kano state governor, Abba Yusuf, has vowed to eradicate polio and reduce the high rate of maternal mortality within the next four months.
The governor stated this at the weekend in Kaduna while declaring opened a training for health personnel, tradional leaders, and council chairmen of the 44 Local Government Areas of the state. The training was organised by  the state Ministry of Health
Yusuf, who was represented by his deputy Aminu Gwarzo, said his administration is “committed to reducing high rate of maternal mortality and complete eradication of  polio by June this year.”
The governor said,  addressing these  critical health challenges is a priority for his administration.
He said the participation of the traditional institution, the state House of Assembly Council Chairmen, and other government functionaries was an indication that the government is determined to end  polio and maternal mortality in Kano state.
The deputy governor who  heads the State Immunization Committee, also called on  health personnel, traditional leaders, and local government officials to take the immunization efforts in their areas seriously.
He urged health workers to be dedicated and to focus efforts on achieving the goals of eradicating polio and reducing maternal mortality.
He warned that, “Any health worker who is not committed, will be replaced without delay with more serious and committed persons.”
Speaking earlier, Rahma  Muhammad
United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF) noted that there had been  a steady increase in the number of polio cases in the state between 2022 and 2025.
Muhammad said, “Children of Kano state are still falling prey to polio virus, and many too are yet to receive any routine vaccines.”
According to him, “Vaccines are one of the most effective and cost-saving public interventions in history. Yet nearly 250,000 children in Kano state are zero dosed (yet to collect vaccine).
