The federal government has confirmed that coordinated security efforts with international partners, including the United States, have resulted in precision air strikes on terrorist targets in the North-West region.
The operation forms part of ongoing measures to combat terrorism and violent extremism across the country.
A statement issued by the Ministry the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the role of international cooperation in the latest operation.
The statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the “Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
“This has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.”
The Ministry explained that collaboration involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other operational support, all conducted in accordance with international law and with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and regional security commitments.
It reiterated the government’s firm position against all forms of extremist violence, stressing that attacks on civilians are unacceptable regardless of religious or communal affiliation.
“Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security.”
The statement said further that all counter-terrorism operations prioritise the protection of civilians, national unity, and the rights and dignity of citizens.
The Ministry further noted that “the federal government continues to work closely with its partners through established diplomatic and security channels to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats, while strengthening Nigeria’s own security institutions and intelligence capabilities.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, reacting to the air strikes and their timing, disclosed that additional operations are expected.
In a social media post, he wrote:
“The President was clear last month: the killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria (and elsewhere) must end.
“The @DeptofWar is always ready, so ISIS found out tonight — on Christmas.
“More to come…” Grateful for Nigerian government support & cooperation. Merry Christmas!”
