Bayelsa state governor Douye Diri, has resigned his membership of the opposition  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Diri announced his resignation  on Wednesday during a cabinet meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The governor said he left the opposition party for “very obvious reasons”.
He said, “Today, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party for very obvious reasons.
“I am grateful to all my friends and supporters who have stood by us and with us, and I want to thank all of you.
“Together, we will continue to build a strong, virile Bayelsa state and a strong and virile country by extension.”
The governor added that members of his cabine and the State House of Assembly have also resigned from the PDP.
Diri’s resignation from the party comes barely 24 hours after the governor of Enugu state, Peter Mba. along his cabinet members, defected from the PDP  to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
