Former Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd) has said that corruption thrives more under civilian leaders than under military rulers.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV on Friday, Babangida said the military are saints when compared to what is happening under a democratic dispensation.
He recalled that when he was military Head of State, he sacked a governor for misappropriating a little over N300,000, noting that under civilian administration, people who steal billions of public funds walk about freely on the streets.
Asked to react to insinuations that his administration was corrupt, Babangida said:
“Well on that, you can’t compare it with the facts on the ground now.
“From what I read, from analysis, I think we are saints when compared to what is happening under a democratic dispensation.
“I sacked a governor for misappropriating less than N313,000.
“Today, those who have stolen billions and are in court are now parading themselves on the streets. Who else is better in fighting corruption?”
Banangida also attributed the growing agitations for self determination by some sections of the country to bad leadership.
According to him, the present crop of politicians are not serious about nation building.
