Sokoto state governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has advised corps members posted to the state against negative use of the social media.
The governor gave the advice on Tuesday at the end of the three weeks orientation for members of Batch ‘B’ Stream I of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Wamako Orientation camp, Sokoto.
Represented by his deputy, Muhammad Gobir, the governor urged the corps members to avoid using the social media for ethnic jingoism, rumour peddling and the promotion of hate speech.
He urged them to shun acts that are capable of portraying the NYSC scheme in a bad light, especially drug abuse and trafficking, cybercrime, and advanced fee fraud.
Aliyu advised the corps members to use the social media for knowledge, self-improvement, promotion of unity, peace and development of the country.
The governor also called on the corps members to sustain the spirit of patriotism, hard work, and resilience they imbibed during the orientation course to move the nation forward.
“My dear compatriots, as you begin the next phase of the service, I urge you to sustain the spirit of patriotism, hard work and resilience, which you imbibed during the Orientation Course.
“It is my ardent hope that you will strive to meet the expectations of Nigerians by contributing towards the progress and development of our dear country”, he said.
He called on the corps members to respect the culture and customs of their host communities, assuring that their security in the state is guaranteed.
Aliyu further assured that the state government would enhance the welfare of corps members in the state, stressing that their allowances would be sustained.
He warned government ministries, departments, and agencies in the state not to reject any corp member for any reason.
Speaking earlier, the state coordinator of the NYSC, Alhaji Usman Yaro, noted that the three weeks of training received on camp has not only instilled the core values of the NYSC scheme in the corps members, but has also impacted positively in them the readiness to embark on developmental projects that would help uplift the nation.
He said 95 per cent of the corps members were posted to schools to contribute their quota to the development of the educational sector in the state.
