Sunday Katung, the Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speculations about Katung’s planned defection had trended for weeks amid denials by his aides.
The senator officially announced his defection in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Madakiya, in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna state.
In the letter dated October 31, 2025, Katung cited evolving political realities within the country and his constituency as reasons for leaving the PDP.
He said the decision followed wide consultations with stakeholders, supporters, and well-meaning Nigerians.
According to him, the APC offers a platform that provides renewed hope for inclusiveness, stability, and sustainable development.
“I wish to formally convey my decision to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today (October 31),” the resignation letter reads.
“This decision, though deeply considered, was not made lightly. Over the years, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to the ideals of democracy, good governance, and service to the people, which the PDP has long stood for.
“However, evolving political realities within our national and my constituency having necessitated a re-evaluation of the platform best suited to advance the aspirations and welfare of my people.
“After wide consultations with stakeholders, supporters, and well-meaning Nigerians, I have resolved to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC), a platform whose current direction and leadership provide renewed hope for inclusiveness, stability, and sustainable development.
“My decision is guided solely by the desire to serve my constituents and the nation more effectively and to contribute meaningfully to the collective progress of our democracy.
“I hold in high regard the friendships, collaborations, and experiences I have shared with colleagues and leaders in the PDP.
“I remain profoundly grateful for the opportunities the party afforded me over the years and wish it continued success in its future endeavours…”
Katung’s defection adds to the growing list of PDP leaders crossing over to the ruling party in Kaduna State.
Only recently, Governor Uba Sani received three federal lawmakers elected on the PDP platform into the APC.
They include Mustapha Aliyu Abdullahi – Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, Sadiq Ango Abdullahi – Sabon Gari Federal Constituency, and Hussaini Abdulkarim Kero Kaduna South – Federal Constituency.
