The Kano state governorship election petition tribunal has declared Yusuf Ganuwa of the AlI Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected governor of the state. The tribunal, in a judgment delivered on Wednesday via Zoom, upturned the election of Abba Yusuf of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (|NEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to him.
Yusuf was declared the winner of the March 11 governorship after securing 1,019,602 votes to defeat his close rival, Gawuna, who garnered 890,705 votes.
Dissatisfied with the outcome of the election, Gawuna and his party, the APC challenged the victory of the NNPP candidate at the tribunal.
During the proceedings, the three-man panel, deducted 165,663 votes from Yusuf, declaring them as invalid, stating that the ballot papers (165,663) were not stamped or signed and therefore declared invalid.
The court ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to the APC candidate.
The panel decided to deliver the judgment by zoom following tension in the state.
