The Arewa Citizens Watch for Good Governance, (ACWGG), has directed its members to converge on the Abuja headquarters of the Nigerian National Company Limited (NNCL), on Thursday, to demand for the resignation of Mele Kyari, its chief executive, over high cost of petrol and wide spread hunger.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday in Kaduna, Aminu Abbas, publicity secretary of the group, alleged that the NNPCL was responsible for racketeering that led to the removal of subsidy on petrol.
Abbas lamented that the recent increase in the pump price of petrol has led to widespread hunger in the country, especially in the North.
He said, “Our group believes strongly that the endemic and systemic corruption in the corporation, encouraged the racketeering in the subsidy administration, which ended up lining the pockets of major marketers with petro-dollars at the detriment of Nigerians.
“As you may be aware, there was artificial fuel scarcity in the significant part of 2022 and early 2023 which led to a build-up of queues in our fueling stations.
“Miraculously, the queues disappeared immediately after the 2023 general elections.
“Most Nigerians believe that the forces behind the scarcity and unwarranted increase in the price of the petrol were working against the interest of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who at that time, was the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections. Their plot however, boomeranged.”
According to the group, “These forces took the fight to another dimension by persuading Tinubu who emerged as President, to announce the removal of subsidy without carrying out a proper situation analysis.
“This, we believe was done to punish poor Nigerians who willingly voted for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu…”
Abbas also frowned at plans to rearward the contract for Pipeline Surveillance, to Tantita Security, a company owned by Tampolo, ex- Niger Delta militant leader, noting that amount to vote of no confidence on the nation’s security agencies.
He said, “With the termination of the subsidy regime, the NNPCL is planning to reaward Pipeline Surveillance contract to the Tompolo-owned Tantita Security Company.
“This is a deliberate way of passing vote of no confidence on our Armed Forces, who are working tirelessly to ensure that we sleep with our two eyes closed…
“It is on the strength of the above background that we wish to call on our members to converge at the NNPC headquarters, Abuja on Thursday, to commence mass civil action that will force the NNPCL helmsman to resign or be sacked by Mr President.”
