Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom state, has been elected as the Senate President of the 10th Senate.
Akpabio who represents Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial district, is the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He contested for the Senate Presidency with a former governor of Zamfara state, Abdulazeez Yari, a first time senator, representing Zamfara West senatorial district.
The Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal, declared Akpabio as winner, having garnered 63 votes against Yari who garnered 46 votes.
A Senator representing Kano North, Barau Jibrin, also emerged as the deputy senate president. Jibrin was elected unopposed.
Akpabio was immediately sworn-in after he was announced winner of the election.
