Gunmen, in the early hours of Monday, attacked the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Kebbi State, killing the Vice Principal while 25 students were kidnapped.
Spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command, Nafi’u Abubakar, confirmed the attack in a statement, noting that the assailants, wielding “sophisticated weapons,” stormed the school at about 4:00 a.m. and engaged policemen on duty in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
During the assault, the school’s Vice Principal, Hassan Makuku, was shot and killed, while a security guard, Ali Shehu, sustained gunshot injuries to his right hand.
A teacher at the school reported that the attackers escaped with the abducted students, heading towards the forests bordering Zamfara state.
In response, Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello Muhammad Sani, ordered the deployment of additional police tactical units, in collaboration with military personnel and local vigilance groups, to track the fleeing gunmen.
“The combined team is currently combing suspected escape routes and surrounding forests in a coordinated search-and-rescue operation aimed at recovering the abducted students and arresting the perpetrators,” the command said.
The commissioner urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies were working tirelessly to restore safety and protect communities across the state.
