Governors Mbah of Enugu & Kefas of Taraba Join APC: Is This the Final Collapse of the PDP?

Barring any last-minute surprises, Nigeria is about to witness another massive decamping from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) — a movement that could reshape the nation’s political landscape before the 2027 general elections.

For the first time since 1999, states that have never voted for the APC or any opposition party are set to fall into the ruling party’s hands. Among these is Taraba State, long considered a PDP fortress in Northern Nigeria. Governor Agbu Kefas, a former PDP chairman and career military officer, is reportedly concluding plans to defect to the APC, along with virtually all elected PDP officials in the state. Committees have already been mobilized to convince local leaders and stakeholders to join him — a move that would make Taraba’s Government House turn APC for the first time ever.

In the Southeast, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State is also said to have completed arrangements to cross over to the APC. His political maneuvering has been an open secret, with reports suggesting he had previously courted Labour Party members to strengthen his base before making the switch. Should this happen, it would mark the first time in history that both the South-South and South-East regions would be without a single PDP governor — an unthinkable scenario a decade ago.

If the dominoes fall as predicted, only Diri Douye of Bayelsa, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo would remain under the PDP banner — and even their long-term loyalty is being questioned. Rumors persist that several of these governors have already reached private understandings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, agreeing to cooperate with the APC government in exchange for political protection or future benefits.

This unprecedented shift raises critical questions:

  • Has the PDP finally reached the end of its political life cycle?
  • Why are governors who have nothing to lose — including those on their second terms — abandoning their parties to join the ruling APC?
  • Is this a strategy for self-preservation in anticipation of a potentially compromised 2027 election?

Across the country, whispers of manipulation grow louder. In Lagos, transport union leaders and Tinubu loyalists have reportedly vowed to ensure that no opposition wins in 2027. Critics argue that the ruling party is quietly assembling “gatekeepers” across the states — from governors to traditional rulers — to guarantee electoral dominance regardless of public opinion.

Yet history offers cautionary lessons. In 2003, AD governors who supported President Olusegun Obasanjo in his re-election bid were swiftly discarded after his victory, losing their seats in subsequent polls. Ironically, Bola Tinubu, the only AD governor who resisted Obasanjo, survived and went on to build the political structure that dominates Nigeria today. Could the new defectors face a similar fate?

The implications are enormous. The collapse of the PDP’s territorial strongholds — Taraba in the North, Enugu in the East, and Bayelsa in the South-South — may signal the emergence of a de facto one-party state, with far-reaching consequences for democracy, accountability, and Nigeria’s federal balance.

Are these decamping governors acting in the interest of their people or out of personal political survival? Will citizens follow their governors into the APC, or will they resist and chart their own electoral path? And if elections are not free and fair in 2027, what becomes of Nigeria’s fragile democracy?
