Chairman of a  faction of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, Rev. Yakubu Pam has said that there is currently no recognised chairman of the association until the determination of a case before a  Federal High Court in Kaduna.
In a statement  on Saturday,  Pam cautioned  political leaders and the Christian community against recognising any individual claiming to be chairman of Northern CAN until the court delivers judgment on the leadership tusle in the association.
Pam was the chairman of the association before the controversy over his alleged tenure elongation, which led to the purported election of Rev. Josephh Hayab by his supporters as chairman of the association.
Following the development, Pam filed a suit at the Kaduna federal High Court challenging the purported election of Hayab.
“For the record, we wish to state that there is no recognised chairman of Northern CAN until the court delivers judgment in the matter before it,” Pam said.
According to him, “Northern CAN was never established to be a political tool. Its mission is to promote peaceful coexistence and spiritual growth and to stand in the gap for Christians in Northern Nigeria, many of whom face unique challenges.”
He also noted the “misrepresentation” regarding the status of the court case involving against Hayab, who, according to him, “has continued to present himself as the chairman of Northern CAN.”
“We have noted with concern the misrepresentation circulating in some quarters regarding the status of our court case against Hayab.
“Contrary to reports suggesting that the case has been adjourned indefinitely, this is not the correct position.
“At the last sitting of the court on September 18, 2025, counsels made submissions, and the case was adjourned for ruling.
“The honourable judge announced that the court would communicate the date for judgment once it was ready,” he explained.
Pam reaffirmed his group’s commitment to legal due process and respect for the judiciary, saying he remains confident in the legal system.
“We are not worried. The court operates within its procedures, and we believe that justice, no matter how long it takes, will prevail.
“Our duty is to remain patient and allow the court to dispense justice in accordance with the law,” he added.
Pam criticised Hayab for continuing to act as chairman despite the matter being sub judice.
“It is regrettable that while the matter is still before the court, Hayab continues to parade himself publicly as the Chairman of Northern CAN,” Pam said.
“Let it be clear: the mere act of showcasing oneself does not confer legitimacy. When somebody snatches a bag and runs, it does not make him the rightful owner. No matter how far or fast he runs, he knows the bag is stolen. Possession does not mean legitimacy, “Pam said.
He urged church leaders and the Christian faithful, particularly in the North, to remain calm and prayerful as the case progresses.
He also cautioned  politicians and stakeholders to be wary of individuals who have been moving from one governmenthouse to the other in the name of Northern CAN leaders.
“To the politicians and political office holders, we offer a word of caution: be wary of the desperation and deceit that has driven certain individuals who have been moving from one government house to another in the name of Northern CAN,” he said.
Pam called on allwell-meaning  Nigerians, the church, and the media to reject actions that promote division in the body of Christ.
