The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has felicitated with muslims as they mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
In a goodwill message signed by Yakubu Pam, its chairman, the association described occasion as a “sacred time of spiritual reflection, sacrifice, and renewed commitment to shared national values.”
The association urged all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of selflessness and unity, especially in the current socio-economic challenges facing the country.
“Eid-el-Kabir is not only a season of religious significance but also a call to all citizens to deepen our commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and nation-building,” the statement said.
Pam, however, noted with concern the severe hardship being experienced by many Nigerians, which has significantly affected the ability of Muslim families to celebrate the festival as traditionally observed.
“Many households are unable to afford basic needs, let alone the costs associated with Eid-el-Kabir.
“The price of rams, ranging from N200,000 to as high as N1.8 million, is far beyond the reach of ordinary Muslims,” he stated.
The association called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the growing hardship, hunger, and poverty affecting millions of citizens.
It urged the government to “listen to the voices of ordinary Nigerians and take meaningful action to alleviate their suffering.”
The statement also lamented the persistent insecurity in some parts of the country, particularly in Benue, Zamfara, Plateau, Katsina, and Borno states.
While acknowledging that some progress has been made in the security sector, the association expressed deep concern over the resurgence of terrorism, banditry, and violent crimes.
“We commend the efforts made so far in tackling insecurity but urge the government to act swiftly and decisively in combatting the resurgence of activities of bandits and terrorists in parts of the country”, Pam said.
Northern CAN applauded the recent appointment of Sama’ila Audu, an indigenous Christian from Katsina state, as the Executive Director, Administration, at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Pam described the appointment as commendable and called on Tinubu to continue to promote inclusiveness by appointing more qualified indigenous Christians from the North to key government positions.
“We pray for the Muslim Ummah to receive abundant blessings during this season, as they strive to emulate the exemplary life and teachings of the Prophet,” the statement” the statement added.
