Amnesty International has said that the death toll from the latest attack on a community in Bassa LGA of Plateau state has on Monday, risen to 54.
In a statement on Monday, Amnesty International said hundreds of people have been displaced since the incident, adding that residents are living in fear of the next possible attack.
The organisation noted that the patterns of recent attacks in the state show the Nigerian authorities have left the affected communities at the mercy of gunmen.
“The death toll after the gunmen’s attack on Zikke is now 54, as more dead bodies were being discovered in the bush.
Mass burial is being planned as search for those missing is ongoing,” Amnesty said.
“Hundreds of people have been displaced since the attack last night. People of this area have been constantly living on the edge, bracing up for the next attack.”
Amnesty International noted that 1,336 people have been killed and 29,554 displaced in Plateau from December 2023 to February 2024.
