Take drastic action against terrorists, Plateau Elders tell FG

The Plateau Elders Forum (PEF) have expressed concern over the persistent killings in communities Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau state and increasing cases of kidnappings in the state. In a statement in Jos, the forum asked the government, the Nigerian army and other security agencies to take drastic steps to deal with the criminals.
On April 2, 2022, gunmen killed 12 people and injured 28 others during the Zerreci annual festival of the Irigwe ethnic nationality which held in Chado Zerreci community, Bassa LGA.
There had also been several cases of abductions in the state, the latest being Saturday’s kidnapping of the wife and daughter of a commissioner at his residence in Gindiri, Mangu LGA of the state.
PEF, in the statement signed by its spokesman, Mr. Jonathan Ishaku, called on the government to adopt a more drastic approach in synergy with the military to tackle the terrorists.
The forum noted that the barracks of the 3rd Armoured Division, Nigerian Army, is located in the Bassa LGA, stressing that the army is at vintage position to deal decisively with the criminals in accordance with the federal government’s designation of the miscreants as terrorists.
The statement reads: “The Plateau Elders Forum, at its meeting on Thursday, 7th April, 2022, condemned the lingering attacks on communities in Miango area of Bassa Local Government Area as well as the rising rate of kidnapping in the state.
“On the killings in Miango villages, while commiserating with relatives of the bereaved and wishing the injured quick recovery, the elders called on the government to acknowledge its past inability to stem the violence and therefore it should adopt a more drastic approach in synergy with the military.
“The forum noted that since the military has a major barracks domiciled in the Rukuba community, it is in a vintage position to deal decisively with the assailants in accordance with the federal government’s designation of such non-state actors as terrorists.
“The forum pointed out that adopting a drastic approach had become imperative in view of the heightened political activities in the country and the need to provide a conducive atmosphere for peaceful political transition”.
