Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state, says he sees himself as representative of human rights and pro-democracy movement in government.
Sani spoke on Sunday in Kaduna at the 86th Chief Gani Fawehinmi posthumous birthday celebration and the immortalisation of Balarabe Musa, a former governor of Kaduna state.
Sani said Fawehinmi and Musa devoted their lives to the struggle for social justice.
The governor noted that Fawehinmi used the instrumentality of the law to fight for social justice, while Alhaji Balarabe Musa deployed his mobilizational skills to rally the masses to take their destiny in their own hands.
“I am extremely delighted to be in the midst of my dear comrades and colleagues in the human rights and pro-democracy struggles.
“This is one reunion I deeply cherish. We must sustain such fora in order to continually reflect on our past struggles, critically look at current and emerging issues, and chart the pathway to a better future for our country.
“We are here to remember and honour two icons who devoted their lives to the struggle for social justice”, the governor said.
Speaking further, Sani said,
“I honed my political skills in the ‘furnace’ of the struggle for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.
“I was a civil rights activist for so many years, after graduating as an engineer.
“My colleagues and I fought for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.
“I was the National Vice Chairman (North West) of the Campaign for Democracy (CD), which was then headed by Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, of blessed memory.
“Thereafter, we decided to form a coalition of opposition groups against military rule.
“We formed the Joint Action Committee of Nigeria, JACON, which was headed by the legendary Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
“In JACON, I also became the Deputy National Chairman, North.
He said, “As governor, I see myself as a representative of the human rights and pro-democracy movement.
“We are running an inclusive, pro – people government committed to bringing succour to the poor, vulnerable and underserved in Kaduna State.
“We have come up with initiatives to lessen the pains of the people”.
He said the Kaduna state government is implementing a massive rural transformation programme aimed at reducing poverty and unlocking the enormous potential of the state.
“Our administration has prioritized education. We are massively rehabilitating and constructing classrooms in primary and secondary schools across the State.
“Quaranic or Tsangaya schools are also receiving the priority attention of our administration…”
Sani recalled that in 2000, the late Fawehinmi appointed him as coordinator (North), Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Foundation.
He said the foundation assisted brilliant but indigent students in the North to finish their studies in various institutions of learning.
“I am happy to inform you that most of the beneficiaries of the Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Scheme are now doctors, lawyers, pharmacists and engineers.
“They are making their contributions to national development.
“The inspiration I got from Fawehinmi and my experience as the Northern Coordinator of the scholarship scheme enabled me to set up the Uba Sani Foundation, devoted to poverty alleviation, education and healthcare for the underprivileged, and entrepreneurship and skills acquisition for youths, women and the underprivileged.
“The foundation also has a scholarship scheme designed to assist brilliant children of the poor and vulnerable who may not be able to continue their educational pursuit owing to the inability of their parents to meet the demands for registration fees for examinations, tuition fees and other important materials needed for their study…”
