A Non-Government Organization – Resilient Aid and Dialogue Initiative (RADI) has distributed bags of rice to internally displaced persons (IDPs) from 11 communities in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna state.
Programme Officer of RADI, Reuben Buhari, stated this in a statement on Sunday in Kaduna.
He said RADI donated 50 bags of grains on Sunday to the IDPs in Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru LGA Buhari added that the 50 bags were shared among 140 IDPs who fled their communities since December 2022, following the deadly activities of bandits.
According to him, the grains were supplied through a scheme called “Fertilizer Birth Initiative.”
Buhari explained that, “The scheme adopts a local practice in most of the communities in Kaduna state. “We supply fertilizers from a donor to IDPs who can farm but are unable to buy fertilizer.
“After harvest, each beneficiary beings a bag or two of grains. “We gather these bags of grains and then share it to other IDPs who were unable to farm.
“In this way, we ensure that those who can farm get fertilizer, while those who cannot, get food. It means they also have seedlings for the next farming season”.
He said the victims were displaced from their homes following incessant attacks and kidnappings by armed herdsmen terrorizing many communities.
According to him, the attacks had forced many rural dwellers to flee their homes to safer places around Mararaban Kajuru, headquarters of Kajuru LGA and Kaduna metropolis.
Also speaking during the distribution of the grains, RADI’s Director of Humanitarian Affairs, Alheri
Magaji, explained further that the project was made possible through funding from the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, with Meridian International Centre, as the implementing partner.
Magaji said, “This is the first phase of the distribution, we are going to carry out another one next week in a different community where grains had been collected for distribution.”
She said, the IDPs came from communities like; Kikwari, Mokorozankarya, Maikori, Ungwan Aku, Robo, Karamai, Kasau and Kallah.
Kajuru LGA is one of the areas worst hit by nefarious activities of bandits in Kaduna state.
