The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Monday blocked the entrance of the National Assembly to demand for the implementation of financial autonomy of the judiciary.
The NBA, had warned at the weekend that it would join the protest march of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) against the refusal of state governors to obey the financial autonomy law.
The protesting lawmakers who were led by the First Vice-President of NBA, Mr John Aikpokpo-Martins, blocked the entrance of the National Assembly, insisting that there would be no entry nor exit until they were allowed in.
NBA said whatever affects the judiciary also affects it, urged the leadership National Assembly to prevail on the governors to comply and obey various courts decisions in favour of financial autonomy of the Judiciary.
The lawyers were however refused entrance to the National Assembly complex.
A police officer, who attended to them, explained that without a formal notification, they would not be allowed access to the National Assembly.
Besides, he added that there is also no official on ground to attend to them.
The NBA Vice President, Aikpokpo-Martins however, lamented that the governors have refused financial autonomy for the judiciary despite all entreaties to obey the provisions of the constitution on financial autonomy.
He noted that the federal government has already complied with the constitutional provisions, stressing that their protest to the National Assembly was to urge the leadership to prevail on the governors to comply and obey various courts decisions in favour of financial autonomy of the Judiciary.
