A group- Nigerian Youth Treaty for Good Governance (NYTGG), has called on President Bola Tinubu to sack Adebayo Adelabu, minister of power and Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
In a statement on Tuesday in Kaduna, Abdullahi Sani, Chairman of the group, said Nigerians have witnessed numerous collapse of the national grid and distribution inefficiency due to Adelabu and Abdulaziz’s lack of capacity to address the challenges in the power sector.
The group said many businesses have suffered immense losses as a result of frequent collapse of the national grid.
The statement said, “As a nation aspiring to join the ranks of top-performing economies globally, we can no longer afford to ignore the detrimental impact that the failures of the Power Minister and the TCN leadership have on our collective development”.
It added that “It has become intolerable that, under the supervision of the current Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, Nigeria has witnessed numerous collapse of power grid and distribution inefficiency.”
Sani maintained that, “The persistent issues that have arisen in the power sector not only reflect poorly on the government but also cause widespread hardship for the citizens.
“Many Nigerians have been left in the dark, businesses have suffered immense losses, and the nation’s economy has been hindered by the failures associated with energy supply.
“It is on record that since the beginning of President Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has experienced an unprecedented number of system collapses, leading to widespread blackouts across the country. “These failures are as a result of the combination of poor infrastructure, inadequate management, and lack of accountability in the leadership of the power sector”.
The group lamented that it is unfortunate that the Minister and the Managing Director have failed to provide adequate strategies to rectify challenges.
The group noted that small businesses are dying as they cannot afford the high cost of petrol for generator.
“This is coming at a time Nigerians are yet to overcome the shock from fuel price increment due to subsidy removal.
“In light of this situation, we strongly urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to include Adebayo Adelabu’s name among those to be affected by the imminent cabinet reshufflement.
“The constant failures in the power sector must be met with decisive action from the highest levels of government”, Sani sai
The group further appealed to the President to restructure the leadership in the power sector.
