The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), has elected Rev. Fr. Williams Awoshiri as its new chairman.
The election which took place on Thursday in Jalingo, was supervised by a delegation from the National Secretariat of CAN, led by Dr. Uzoaku Williams.
Awoshiri’s election, according to the association, signals a renewed commitment to Christian unity, interfaith cooperation and social justice across the state.
In his acceptance speech, Awoshiri, a Catholic priest and academic, reaffirmed his commitment to the association’s guiding motto, “That they all may be one” (John 17:21).
He stressed that his leadership would work toward strengthening Christian unity and promoting collaboration across religious lines as essential paths to peace and development.
“There can be no peace without unity, and no development without justice.
“My leadership will engage like-minded individuals from all faiths to foster peace, uphold justice, and spur meaningful progress in Taraba state”, he said.
Awoshiri also underscored the importance of inclusive leadership, pledging to bridge denominational and interreligious divides. “Our diversity should be our strength, not our division,” he said.
The new CAN chairman called for a united Christian front to effectively advance the gospel and bring more people to Christ.
Other members of the new executive include; Rev. Samuel Ibrahim Jatau (CCN) as Vice Chairman, Rev. Nelson Dunah (CPFN/PFN) as Secretary, Rev. Samaila Tsapta (TEKAN/ECWA) as Assistant Secretary, and Apostle Sunday Adetiba (OAIC) as Treasurer.
