The secretary-general of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, is dead.
The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), disclosed this on a tweeter post in the early hours of Wednesday.
He said Barkindo died at about 11p.m on Tuesday few hours after delivering a speech to oil and gas stakeholders at the ongoing 2022 Nigerian oil and gas conference and exhibition in Abuja.
After the event, Barkindo, 63, met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja, alongside a delegation from the OPEC secretariat.
Buhari had during the meeting, the outgoing outgoing OPEC Secretary General for his meritorious service, describing him as a worthy ambassador of the country.
Buhari had said, posterity will remember him kindly for making the nation and himself proud during his six years of meritorious service at the helm of affairs as the 4th OPEC Secretary-General from Nigeria.
“You have indeed been a worthy ambassador of our country. We are proud of your achievements before and during your appointment at OPEC and the proud legacies you will leave behind”, the President had said during the meeting.
Mele, described Kyari’s death as a great loss to his immediate family, NNPC Nigeria, OPEC and the global energy community.
“We lost our esteemed Dr. Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11 pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly”, Kyari tweeted.
