The Kaduna Diocese of the Anglican Communion, has announced the death of  Venerable Edwin Achi, the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maigyoro area of Kaduna metropolis.
The priest who hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta, was kidnapped alongside his wife, Sarah Achi, a customs officer and their daughter on October 28, 2025, after armed assailants invaded their residence in Nissi community, near the Kaduna refinery.
Days after their abduction, the kidnappers reached out to the family, demanding a ransom.
In a statement posted  on the official Facebook page of the Kaduna Anglican Communion on Wednesday, the church described  Achi’s passing, as “a painful loss to the entire diocese, the clergy, the church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion to the service of God”.
The statement reads: “With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing onto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi.
“Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October 2025, has been confirmed dead.”
The church announced the suspension of its annual ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’ event in honour of the late cleric and appealed for prayers for the safe return of Achi’s wife and daughter, who remain in captivity.
The unfortunate incident occurred amid allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
Banditry and kidnappings have also been on the rise with the kidnappings of students in Niger and Kebbi states and the abduction of worshippers in a church in Kwara state.
