The Kaduna state government has confirmed the killing of a student and the abduction of 10 others including lectures by bandits at the state owned Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria.
The bandits were said to have invaded the school on Thursday night at about 11pm, unleashing terror on the students and staff.
In a statement on Friday, Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, said one student was killed , one was injured and several others kidnapped.
He said security agencies briefed the state government of the attack at the main campus of the institution on Thursday night.
Aruwan said security the briefings indicate that “the bandits invaded the staff quarters of the campus, shooting sporadically.”
The statement added that in the process, two students were hit and sustained gunshot injuries.
The statement said the students were identified as Ahmad Muhammad and Haruna Isyaku Duniya.
Aruwan said the wounded students were rushed to the hospital for medical attention, “sadly, Ahmad Muhammad succumbed to his wounds and died early this morning. Haruna Isyaku Duniya is still receiving treatment.”
According to the commissioner, two lecturers and about eight students were abducted from the institution during the attack.
The commissioner said, “Governor Nasir El-Rufai received the briefing with sadness and prayed for the repose of the soul of the student killed, while sending condolences to his family. He wished the injured student a speedy recovery.
“As at the time of this update, senior government officials and security agencies are conducting security assessments and interfacing with the management and students of the institution.
“The public will be updated on further developments.”
